Respectability Politics in Social Activism

Respectability Politics in Social Activism
Date and time
5:00 PM - 6:30 PM, October 30, 2017
Description

Smile. Talk calmly. Educate and have compassion. So much of the advice for young activists is about how to appeal and be accepted by individuals with privileged identities. However, we rarely have conversations with privileged individuals about what it means when they demand certain attitudes as a condition of engaging in anti-oppression work. Join this event to learn more about respectability politics, how to engage emotion in activism, and where we can collectively continue our own self-work. Co-sponsored by the Missouri State Collegiate Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
