In the insular and theocratic Puritan village of 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, a group of young girls are discovered dancing in the woods and immediately fall ill. To divert suspicion from their own activities, they accuse a young farmer’s wife of witchcraft. As the farmer struggles to clear his wife in court, the malicious lies grow. Fed by long-held grudges and irrational fears, the hysteria expands to engulf a host of other women and the farmer himself. In their zeal to purge the community of evil, the community ignites evil. An allegory for Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anti-Communist crusades of the 1950s,THE CRUCIBLE remains a cautionary tale about the dangers of isolationism, extremism, intolerance and injustice that is just as relevant today.
