Hypersensitivity to sounds or the so-called Hyperacusis is when everyday sounds are intolerable, with the perception of being too loud, annoying or even painful. Intolerance to sounds is a common trait in individuals with tinnitus (ear ringing), auditory processing disorders, ASD, ADHD and migraine. In my lab, we have studied hyperacusis in humans and preclinical animal models to assess the involvement of the auditory system.
