Recent scholarship illuminates numerous ways that human and environmental concerns are intricately intertwined. Most people benefit from driving, flying, using plastic bags and disposable diapers. But advances and economic growth often have a downside. Damaging environmental crises, such as the Flint water emergency, food deserts, deforestation and issues of climate change highlight the uglier side of progress. How are systemic inequities disproportionately affecting marginalized peoples and communities? How can a balance between the emotional and the logical be achieved when addressing these issues? What role can the arts and different mediums of expression be the voice for eco-social issues?
