Seminar: Dr. Thomas Sewell from University of Missouri-Columbia

Seminar: Dr. Thomas Sewell from University of Missouri-Columbia
Date and time
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM, September 21, 2017
Description

The results of recent theoretical atomic-scale studies of CHNO plastic-bonded explosive constituent materials will be presented, emphasizing the effects of static and dynamic compression on structure and mechanics, energy redistribution, thermal transport and dynamic deformation processes. These studies all employ molecular dynamics in one form or another.  In his talk, Chemistry Professor Dr. Thomas Sewell will discuss energy transfer, microscopic material flow characteristics and thermal transport properties. Research findings can be used in defense, geologic, mining and construction industries.

Dr. Sewell earned his Ph.D. in theoretical physical chemistry at Oklahoma State University and did postdoctoral research in the Department of Physical Chemistry at the University of Göteborg, Sweden. He currently a chemistry professor at Mizzou and holds adjunct status in mechanical engineering as well.

This seminar is co-sponsored by the Depts. of Chemistry and Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science.
