You Can't Take It With You

Date, Time and Location:
8:00 PM - 10:30 PM, July 3, 2014
Event Details:

Grandpa Martin Vanderhof and his eccentric extended family are anything but traditional. Daughter Penny writes racy melodramas, while son-in-law Paul manufactures fireworks in the basement. When not studying ballet with the colorful Russian expatriate Boris Kolenkhov, granddaughter Essie makes candy, which is sold by her husband, Ed, who lines the boxes with subversive messages produced on his own printing press.   The family’s ramshackle New York home is a haven for dreamers, tinkerers and nonconformists who espouse Grandpa’s credo: “Don’t do anything that you’re not going to enjoy doing.” For Grandpa, that includes not paying taxes for the past 24 years!   The only “normal” person in the household is granddaughter Alice, a secretary at the Wall Street firm of Kirby & Company. Alice and Tony Kirby, the CEO’s son and heir apparent, are in love and want to marry. Alice is embarrassed for the conservative Kirbys to meet her unorthodox family, but Tony persuades her to invite his parents to dinner.   Soon, sparks are flying, the house is overrun by government agents, pandemonium ensues, and Alice and Tony’s engagement is off!  With the young couple’s happiness at stake, Grandpa goes all out to convince Mr. Kirby that there’s more to life than money. After all, You Can’t Take It With You!   This explosive comedy won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1937, and its message still reverberates!
