Description

2019 marks the 100th anniversary of Thomas M. Johnson's passing, as well as the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Johnson Library and Museum in Osceola, Missouri. In celebration, a two-day symposium will be held:

Nov. 7, 1:30-5:45 p.m. (MSU Libraries, Springfield):
View a sample of MSU Libraries unique holdings related to Johnson. Scholarly presentations by experts on Johnson will also take place, each approximately 30 minutes in length.

Nov. 8 (Osceola):
Event organizers, sponsors and speakers will visit the Johnson Library and Museum and have the opportunity to view samples of the family's extraordinary collection of books and letters. Visit the Johnson Library website for more details on this collection.

Additional information on Johnson:
Johnson (1851-1919) was born in Osceola, where he served as mayor, prosecuting attorney and school superintendent. An ardent Platonist, he was actively involved in both philosophical and esoteric circles, producing translations, publishing journals and collecting rare books. He corresponded with dozens of intellectuals and prominent figures worldwide and amassed a library of nearly 10,000 volumes - hundreds of which were printed in the 16th and 17th centuries.
